Released in March 1987, U2’s The Joshua Tree quickly became the fastest-selling album in British chart history, selling almost 250000 copies within its first week of release. In the US it was equally as successful, topping the Billboard album chart for nine weeks, spending 58 weeks in the Top 40 there, and earning a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The Joshua Tree gave birth to several major hit singles including With Or Without You and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, both of which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and Where The Streets Have No Name. The album The Joshua Tree marked a watershed in U2’s already-burgeoning career. Apart from winning several Grammy Awards (including for Best Rock Performance) the band also won a BRIT Award for Best International Group. The album is now recognised as an all-time rock classic. The story of the making of The Joshua Tree is told here, via interview and archive film footage, with contributions from band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen. U2’s long-time manager Paul mcguiness reveals how the album catapulted the band into the category of rock superstars, and there are contributions from re-mix producer Steve Lillywhite, co-producer Brian Eno and Elvis Costello among others. Here we learn the true story from Brian Eno of how the master tape for Where The Streets Have No Name was almost destroyed, and how a forgotten birthday resulted in one of U2’s best ever songs. Packed with …

This installment of the Classic Albums series explores the making of this album in a one-hour documentary film, with Collins himself providing the bulk of the insightful commentary. From his home studio, he discusses how the lyrics to “In the Air Tonight” wrote themselves after his painful divorce and why a drummer would ever use a drum machine. Also interviewed are engineer Hugh Padgham, producer Ahmet Ertegun, Genesis colleagues Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, and many of the studio musicians. Songs such as “Behind the Lines,” “I Missed Again,” “The Roof Is Leaking,” “This Must Be Love,” and of course “In the Air Tonight” are excerpted in both home and concert footage (some of it previously unreleased), and Collins accompanies himself at the piano in a wrenching “Please Don’t Ask,” which was cut from the album. In the two decades between the original album’s appearance and this 1999 video production, Phil Collins has gone on to become an international solo star, but many still consider Face Value his finest album. This documentary shows you why. Links to purchase below. UK customers: www.amazon.co.uk US Customers: www.amazon.com

Had Judas Priest released just this one album, it would still go down in history: full blown metallic sound, awesome solos, great lyrics, and god-like vocals: this album has it all. Released in 1980, British Steel opened the era of British metal as we know it (and American metal consequently). Judas Priest was one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 70s, the core band comprised Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, KK Downing and Ian Hill. They set the pace for much popular heavy metal from 1975 until 1985, as well as laying down the groundwork for the speed and death metal of the 80s. The welding of British Steel is told in this exclusive programme in the bands own words, and by their once long-term producer Tom Allom. Featuring archive footage, interviews and rare live performances, plus all of British Steels finest songs. Including Living After Midnight, Breaking The Law, Metal Gods, The Rage, United and Grinder. This is a compelling, witty and exhilarating look at the making of one of heavy metals most artful creations, a true classic album. Recorded in 1972 it features the classic Deep Purple line up of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice at the very peak of their creative powers and became their most commercially successful album worldwide.
